From Newcastle to New York: Garry’s 3300 Mile Challenge

Garry, a special support assistant at Northern Counties, has been taking part in an epic challenge for the last few months.

He has been cycling and running the distance from Newcastle to New York (3,300 miles!) to raise funds towards a once-in-a-lifetime trip for our learners.

This challenge pushed him to average an impressive 19.3 miles per day, cycling all the way to Edinburgh and back, whilst also clocking up the miles in his everyday routine.

The challenge was not without its setbacks.

In October, Garry’s bike was stolen, throwing the entire effort into doubt. But thanks to the generosity of Benfield FC, where Garry also coaches, he was presented with a new bike and able to continue the challenge with renewed determination.

Last week, learners and staff came together to cheer Garry on as he completed the final mile of his challenge. In a special show of support, some of the learners preparing for the New York trip even joined him on their bikes, riding alongside him for that memorable last stretch.

Garry has raised an incredible £1,811 so far, smashing his original £1,000 target.

These funds will help make the New York trip even more unforgettable, allowing our learners to experience everything the Big Apple has to offer!

Reflecting on the experience, Garry said:

“The feeling of relief and achievement that I’ve completed this challenge is unreal.

“But this isn’t about me. This is about helping our learners to experience life-changing opportunities, and to learn that absolutely anything is possible when you set your mind to it.

“The support from my colleagues and local community has been amazing and has helped create what will be an incredible experience for the kids.”

We are so proud of Garry and his compassion and dedication to his challenge, helping to make a lifechanging impact on our wonderful learners.
